Winners of La Crosse school board seats still unknown

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Even with all the precincts reported, it’s still unclear who the winners are in this year’s La Crosse school board election.

It was an unusual race, with only two candidates making the ballot for a three-seat contest. However, since then seven write-in candidates threw their hat into the ring, complicating how votes are tallied up.

For the candidates on the ballot, La Crosse Beverage Brand Manager Tim Alberts pulled in close to 30% of the vote.

18-year-old Central High School student Adam Manka won 22%.

Almost half of the votes cast went to write-in candidates, but it’s unclear how much each candidate received. Without knowing those numbers, it’s impossible to say who the winners are.

Election workers recorded all the write-in votes on tally sheets. The sheets, along with all the ballots, will be recounted and confirmed at the school district’s canvass. That’s scheduled for next Tuesday, April 9.

Residents who live in the district’s boundaries — and the candidates themselves — will have to wait another week before knowing for sure who will be the three newest members of the school board.
