Statesville PD: Man charged after beaten, unresponsive toddler uncovers years-prior rape allegations [Video]

STATESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) – A man was arrested on Tuesday, March 5, after an investigation into a beaten and unresponsive toddler uncovered years-prior rape allegations, according to the Statesville Police Department.

26-year-old Christopher Jose Torres is being held under a $1.25 million bond and is facing numerous charges which include statutory rape and child abuse.

Police said last month, a 13-month-old was rushed to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment after sustaining intentional injuries, including two brain bleeds and bruising. According to reports, the boyfriend of that child’s mother, Torres, was interviewed and claimed the injuries were from a fall; however, a medical examination deemed his explanation to be untruthful.

In the following days, authorities said they learned Torres had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old when he was 21 and obtained warrants for 10 counts of statutory rape/sex offenses.
