Homewoods former finance director arrested for alleged misappropriation of city funds [Video]

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WBRC) – The recently retired City of Homewood Finance Director Robert Burgett was arrested Tuesday morning on theft by deception charges involving alleged misappropriation of city funds.

The Homewood Police Department says on or about April 3, they were made aware of irregularities of the use of city funds by 63-year-old Robert Burgett, Homewood’s former finance director.

Burgett retired from the City of Homewood March 31.

The city says they noticed “irregularities in the movement of funds” in the days leading up to Burgett’s retirement and began a forensic investigation.

On Tuesday, April 9, HPD detectives arrested Burgett on a felony charge of aggravated theft by deception.

Burgett was taken into custody at his Helena residence at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

He was transported to the Homewood City Jail where he will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail. Burgett’s cash bond is set at $500,000.

The Homewood Police Department continues to investigate.
