The value of card payments increased 8.2% month-on-month to €8.1bn in March, figures from the Central Bank show.
Similarly, the volume of card payments for the month rose by 7.9% to 214m, and both online and point of sale purchases contributed to the growth.
Of the €8.1bn total, domestic payments accounted for €6.7bn, up 7.9% or €493m from February, across €183.5m transactions (+7.7%)
The value of point of sale card payments increased 10.6% or €392m to €4.1bn, with domestic payments rising 10.3% and non-domestic payments up 12.9%.
Mobile wallet or NFC payments have increased 52.7% year-on-year, the most significant annual change in point of sale card payments.
Online card payments grew €5.8% or €222m in value to €4bn, with domestic online payments exceeding €3bn (+5%) and non-domestic online payments rising 8.1% to over €1bn.
The average value of card transaction was €36.57 nationally rising to €51.93 in Leitrim and falling to €27.18 in Meath.
