It is extremely common for new business owners to start their business with a business name, logo design and a website, and expect the sales to start rolling in. A common misconception is that this is all that’s required to start to a successful business. Whilst these three things are a good start, they don’t build trust from your audience and consequently, they’re not enough to grow your business.

I’ve been a small business owner for over twenty years. When I first began my own business, I worked as a freelance makeup artist. I sadly believed the misconception that all I required to build my business was a DIY logo and website, and it cost me more success. Thankfully, my reputation as a MUA grew quickly via word of mouth, because of my high standard of customer service.

Consequently, my business survived for 12 years on customer loyalty alone (years after I closed the business, I was still receiving enquiries and ended up having to change my mobile number). Whilst that was great at keeping me in business, had I understood at the time how valuable and beneficial a strong brand strategy could be, I could have found much more success than I did. What I have since learned is without a brand strategy, it is difficult for a business owner to build trust with their audience and hence it is difficult to grow their business.
