A US influencer’s revelation they had asked for money instead of a gift for her child’s birthday party has caused a storm online, with many regarding it as taboo while others hailed the proposal.

Houston TikToker Rachel Gibbs told her 206,000 followers that for her daughter’s first birthday, the family had requested guests did not bring a gift, but rather donate $5 to the family instead.
