Rent rises are surging at a new record rate of 9.2 percent a year and leaveing people struggling to keep a roof over their heads.
The figure relates to the 12 months for the year ending in March and is up by the previous high of 9 percent in February.
The figures are the highest since this data was first collated by the Office for National Statistics in 2015.
London saw the highest increases in England where the average surged 11.2 percent over the past 12 months. The North East had the lowest average increase at 6.1 percent.
Properties in Kensington and Chelsea had the highest average monthly rents, at £3,305.
