Meta Platforms (META) shares gained 2% in intraday trading Thursday as the tech giant announced an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Meta AI, that is integrated into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The AI assistant could compete with Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google Gemini chatbot.

The AI assistant is built on Meta’s most advanced AI model, Llama 3, which runs on Nvidia’s (NVDA) chips. The company says it “believe[s] Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant you can use for free.”

The company is rolling out Meta AI in English in more than a dozen countries outside of the U.S. including Australia, Canada, and others. Meta said it plans to expand its availability. The company first announced Meta AI in September of 2023.
