Mayor Woodfin sends out SOS call in an effort to better 3rd grade reading levels in Birmingham [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is sending out an SOS here in the Magic City. The mayor is asking retired teachers and educators to participate in the city’s ‘Page Pals’ 3rd grade reading initiative.

Mayor Woodfin says over 700 students inside the Magic City are reading below their grade level, and are at risk of being held back a grade.

“We recognize the critical importance of literacy in the academic success of our students,” said Mayor Woodfin. “Through the Page Pals: SOS initiative, we are mobilizing the expertise of retired educators, and those educators with flexible schedules to provide targeted support where it is needed most.” The mayor went on to call the situation “critical”, and he hopes former or current educators will help.

The city is now seeking 200 people who are willing to provide one hour per day of in-school tutoring for reading over four weeks. Those …
