Grocery Sales Growth Falls Back After Busy Festive Period [Video]

Grocery sales increased 2.2% year-on-year during the post-Christmas period, the latest data from Kantar shows.

The increase in take-home grocery sales moderated in the four weeks to 21 January following a 7.8% increase in the run up to the Christmas, with shoppers spending an additional €21.4m compared to the same period a year earlier,

Grocery inflation stood at 5.9% in the 12 weeks to 21 January, down 1.2 percentage points compared to 7.1% in December.

Emer Healy, business development director at Kantar, said that many consumers are trading down to own label products and looking for deals after indulging over the festive period.

“The amount of sales on promotion has grown by 9.9% year-on-year with shoppers spending €92.6m more than last year, meaning that 28.9% of all value sales this period were on promotion,” she continued.
