A woman of 92 who is in the advanced stages of Parkinson’s Disease and dementia faces demands to pay £7,000 to the DWP due to “outrageous” welfare rules.
The demand would wipe out around one third of her life savings, according to her daughter Rose Chitseko.
The mother – whose name has not been released – was always meticulous and careful with her finances before she fell ill.
However, the issue with her benefits claim relates to a period when her dementia meant she was in need of help with everyday tasks.
The action by the DWP relates to the mother’s failure to notify it about a change in her circumstances five years ago when she was in the early stages of dementia.
At that stage, her daughter started receiving £64.60 a week in carer’s allowance to look after her.
