STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Chia seeds sold at Walmart are being recalled for the potential presence of salmonella, according to a notice by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Natural Sourcing International is recalling one lot of Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds 32 oz. The products have a lot code of 24095 C018, UPC code 078742300665, and an expiration date of Oct. 30, 2026.
The product was sent to Walmart for distribution at stores nationwide under its Great Value store brand.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
