A woman died after fire officials say she drove around a road-closed sign and concrete barriers and went down an embankment off Interstate 40. The Lake Junaluska Fire Department said in a social media post that Haywood County 911 Communications received a notification Saturday night about a car that had gone down an embankment near the 3-mile marker. The post said members of the Lake Junaluska Fire Department arrived at the scene and assisted other agencies with rescuing the driver. Officials say that, due to the complexity of the incident, the emergency crews on the scene began rope rescue operations and rappelled down the embankment. They got to the car and found one person in it while the vehicle was sitting on its passenger side 100 feet from the roadway.
