SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) – The cost of flood damage has been a heavy financial burden on families across northwest Iowa. Now, we’re hearing from a family in Spencer whose repair costs total more than three times the value of their flood-damaged home.
When floodwater rose in Spencer, Iowa, on June 22nd, the Ries family was rescued by boat from their home’s second-story window. While the experience was traumatizing, they say their nightmare had just begun.
Like many others, their home was deemed uninhabitable. After speaking to a contractor, the Ries family learned their $100,000 home sustained damage that would cost over $300,000 to repair.
“Our house is destroyed. We got a contractor to come look at it. $300,000 to fix a $100,000 house,” said Erin Ries.
Their only hope came in the form of a disaster relief loan. However, they still have a major hurdle in their path to rebuilding.
