CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A movie theater in the South Loop has abruptly closed.
The sudden closure of the ShowPlace ICON at Roosevelt Collection Shops, at 150 W. Roosevelt Rd., as well as three out-of-state theaters, effectively ends the Illinois-based Kerasotes Showplace Theatres brand after more than 100 years.
A sign on the door of the theater on the Near South Side read, “We would like to express our sincerest gratitude and appreciation to our guests for your unwavering support, loyalty, and enthusiasm over the many years.”
The Kerasotes brand debuted in 1909 when immigrant Gus Kerasotes opened a nickelodeon in Springfield.
AMC Theaters purchased the brand for $275 million in 2010.
