NC Quick Pass scam messages sent to thousands claiming false debts [Video]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A new scam is impacting North Carolinians where residents are sent a text message that claims they owe money for using toll roads.

The texts include a link for recipients to “pay,” but they are not legitimate and should not be clicked.

The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) said it is not the first time people have received such text messages, but there seems to be a high volume of the scam texts right now.

The NCTA said it started getting phone calls on July 24 from North Carolinians – as well as people from out of state – saying they got texts claiming that records indicate they had unpaid NC Quick Pass toll invoice, and to avoid additional charges, they needed to pay by clicking a link.
