National Urban League urging young people to get out and vote [Video]

Some big names in politics gathered Wednesday to embolden New Orleans' youth to vote ahead of the upcoming election. The National Urban League held a rally at Xavier University, urging people to focus on the election, but also keep in mind issues that could impact them.As the country prepares to elect a new president, Rhonda Spears Bell, the league's senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said they are calling on young voters. "They absolutely understand what's at stake but they need to understand that they need to exercise their power," said Bell.The organization held a rally called "Reclaim Your Vote," with the goal of getting people excited to head to the polls. Young people including rapper YelloPain and Morgan Clark Walker said this election goes beyond a presidential candidate which is the reason they're using their platforms to reach their peers."Me personally I used to be one of those young people who did not understand the importance of voting," said YelloPain."To make sure that the young people have a seat at the table and they have a space where they can be creative and encourage each other and our peers to get out and vote," said Walker.The conference included several speakers including former New Orleans mayor Marc Morial. Morial, who is now president of the National Urban League, urged the crowd to not be blindsided by what he called the spread of misinformation."We must be woke at all of these strategies that are going to be used. Some easily seen, some not easily seen to suppress our vote," said Morial.The event also included a voter registration table where people could check their registration status and find information on voting locations. Organizers said they want to put the resources in the hands of young voters ahead of Nov. 5."Taking their message and issues to the ballot. That's what's important," said Bell.The deadline to register to vote is Monday, Oct. 7, if registering in person or by mail, or Tuesday, Oct. 15, if registering via the GeauxVote online registration system.
