Most supermarket baby food is unhealthy, study says [Video]

(CNN) – The baby food parents are picking up for their infants may not be as healthy as originally thought, according to new research.

According to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nutrients, supermarket baby food aisles are packed with non-nutritious food that contain too much sugar and misleading marketing claims.

Researchers analyzed 651 foods for children ages 6 months to 36 months.

They found that 60% of those analyzed failed to meet recommended World Health Organization nutritional guidelines for infant and toddler foods.

The study said 70% did not meet guidance on protein content, 25% failed to meet calories recommendations and 44% exceeded recommendations for total sugars.

Almost none of the foods met all of the WHO standards for advertising, which focus on clear labeling of ingredients and accurate health claims.
