The legacy of a former University of North Alabama football star, killed in the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, is alive and well thanks to a special scholarship in his name.

That scholarship also helps ensure younger generations never forget the horrors of Sept. 11, 2001.

Army MAJ Dwayne Williams was from Jacksonville, Alabama, went to UNA on a football scholarship, graduated with a degree in marketing, and became a decorated military officer.

Shortly after he died, his family created the Major Dwayne Williams Endowed Scholarship at UNA. This year’s recipient, ROTC Cadet Gabriel Richardson was born five years AFTER those terror attacks, but says he feels a connection to Williams.
