Imani! The final principle of Kwanzaa means “faith” in Swahili. It is celebrated on January 1 of every year. Imani is a celebration of faith in oneself, in others, and in the fight for a better new beginning. It is a reminder to believe in the potential of not only your community but the constant fight for freedom, justice, and equality. Imani is the day that brings the entire celebration of Kwanzaa full circle.
“It all comes down to faith,” said Johnnie Wright, this year’s Kwanzaa organizer. “Believing in these principles, believing in these last seven days and all the things we’ve shared and talked about among each other to have a better future and make 2025 the best year ever.”
For some in Anchorage, this year’s Kwanzaa was an affirmation of a deeply held truth.
