Fort Mill School District continues growth with new schools coming [Video]

FORT MILL, S.C. (WBTV) – There are four school districts in York County. Of those, Fort Mill has the smallest geographic footprint but the most students and a rapidly growing population.

To keep facilities up to speed with the growing student body, Fort Mill voters approved a $204 million school bond back in February. It will pay for a new middle and elementary school, an early childhood education center, more land for future schools, technology upgrades and other improvements.

Building the new schools will cut down on overcrowding at current schools and keep class sizes small.

Fort Mill School District Superintendent Chuck Epps said that over a 25-year period, the student population has grown from 4,000 to 18,500.

With that growth, some changes could be on the horizon.

“We’ll be going through the reassignment process, so we’ve got some exciting, controversial things in the fall,” Epps said.
