Empowering people living with IDD to vote [Video]

A nonprofit is helping people with developmental disabilities prepare to vote this November and staff say it starts with getting registered.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — With election day less than two months away, people at Penn-Mar Human Services are eager to hit the polls.

“I’m really excited about it,” said resident Barbara Leckrone.

Lisa Hartley is the residential supervisor and works with residents one-on-one.

She waits for them to express an interest in voting before providing information on how to do it.

“What they get from social media and family and TV, they’ve already formed their own opinions, and we just provide them with any information they ask for in a way they are going to understand,” Hartley said.

She uses what she calls a three-E philosophy.

“Education, exposure, and experience and that’s part of the whole voting process,” Hartley explained.

It’s a process Angel Myers will experience for the first time.
