East Tennessee content creators weigh-in on potential TikTok ban [Video]

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Living in Jefferson County, Brianne Martin uses her experience as a mom to create content on TikTok. Videos that started as a creative outlet have turned into a social media identity amassing nearly 170,000 followers on the app.

“About a year ago, I started having brands reach out interested in doing collaborative work,” Martin said. “That has become my primary source of income and my family’s secondary source of income.”

Now, Martin said she is scared with uncertainty as Congress considers a bill that could ban TikTok in the United States.

“If TikTok were banned, my job, my income through being a content creator would essentially go away,” Martin said.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act would require the app to cut ties with its China-based parent company, ByteDance, or be banned from app stores in the U.S. Many lawmakers on both sides cited concerns regarding national security.
