Data brief reveals ‘brain drain’ trend in Nebraska [Video]

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Nebraska Statewide Workforce and Educational Reporting System (NSWERS) released a data brief Wednesday that analyzes the factors influencing retention rates from graduates of state postsecondary institutions.

NSWERS said that starting in the 1970s, Nebraska has faced “brain drain,” the migration of highly educated students to another state. NSWERS said that this phenomenon has resulted in a loss of skilled workers, which can negatively impact the economy growth and local businesses.

The key findings from NSWERS suggest strategies to enhance retention of college graduates, particularly through the promotion of internships and work opportunities.

The key findings from the brief are:

  • The critical role of social and economic ties in retaining graduated in Nebraska
  • The varying impact of different degree fields on retention rates
  • The significant influence of work experiences on graduates’ decisions to remain in the state
