Bill seeking to protect kids from targeted social media ads advances in La. legislature [Video]

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A Louisiana lawmaker is proposing legislation to limit social media companies from using personal data to target minors with advertisements.

House Bill 577 is authored by Rep. Kim Carver, R-Mandeville, and was presented to the House Commerce Committee on Monday (4/22). The committee advanced the bill to the full House for consideration.

“This bill is simply a bill that says in Louisiana for users that are minors in Louisiana, we are not going to collect and sell their data for the purpose of targeted advertising,” said Carver.

The bill received support from two high school seniors, Dylan Rhoton and Emma Bonney, who are part of the Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAS).

“These personalized advertisements captivate teen audiences but they frequently portray unattainable beauty standards or social trends,” said Rhoton.
