Moving company data ranks Tennessee fifth for growth [Video]

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A data set from a popular moving company shows Tennessee is one of the top five states people are moving to in the United States. 

U-Haul’s growth rankings show Tennessee ranked fifth behind Florida, North Carolina, Texas and South Carolina for the highest migration numbers. 

The growth index is compiled from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box moving container transactions annually. The rankings are configured by each state’s net gain, or loss, of customers using the company’s equipment.

According to the data, Nashville, Knoxville, Johnson City and Cookeville are the top cities people are moving to. Nashville is ranked sixth on U-Haul’s list of growth for metro areas.  In 2024, Knoxville ranked seventh but didn’t make the list in 2025.
