Raccoon in Cape Elizabeth tests positive for rabies: Maine CDC [Video]

Rabies is a somewhat rare virus that can affect the brain and spinal cord of mammals, but cases have been detected in wild animals in Maine, according to the fact sheet. 

“Animals with rabies usually act strangely when the virus gets to their brain, but signs may vary,” the fact sheet reads. 

Public safety officials ask that anyone who suspects an animal may be carrying the virus to stay clear of that animal and contact local officials. They also urge pet owners to keep up to date on vaccinations for dogs and cats, in accordance with state law. 

If you or your pet may have come into contact with or been bit by a wild animal that may be displaying signs of rabies, state officials encourage you to do the following: 

Wash the wound with soap and water

Contact your doctor or veterinarian for guidance on treatment
