LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Recent phishing scams have been targeting businesses and individuals with verified accounts, according to the Better Business Bureau.

Although account verification is a measure that is supposed to prevent scams, the BBB is offering some tips on how to keep your verified account extra secure.

But first, let’s learn how the scam works.

The BBB said the scam will present itself as a direct message or email that appears to come directly from a social media platform, such as X or Instagram, claiming that your account has been flagged. The message or email will claim that you will need to re-verify your account or risk losing your verified account badge if you don’t respond.

Some X users have reported getting messages or emails claiming their blue verified badge has been marked as spam, and if they don’t appeal the decision, it will be deleted, the BBB said.
