The popular double arch in Lake Powell, which was a favorite for boaters, has collapsed, rangers have confirmed.

The National Park Service said on Friday that the arch, in Rock Creek Bay in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah, came down the day before.

People had been discussing what they had suspected had been a collapse on social media before it was confirmed. Rangers said they suspect changing water levels and erosion from wave action helped bring the structure down.

“Double Arch was formed from 190-million-year-old Navajo sandstone originating in the late Triassic to early Jurassic periods,” the rangers added. “Since formation, this fine-grained sand feature has been subject to spalling and erosion from weather, wind, and rain.”

The arch has also been referred to as “Toilet Bowl”, “Crescent Pool” and “Hole in the Roof” and was beloved by many in the area who have since posted on social media about their memories there.
