Digital Tools for an Evidence-Based Design Process [Video]

Our world is rapidly changing. Availability of information is exponentially growing. Traditional design methodologies need to be adjusted to shift towards a near real-time and agile design process in which we have a social and urban systems focus. The diversity and complexity of this growing pool of data paired with advanced processes for analysis, manipulation, and visualization allows designers to an evidence-based design process. The role of designers is increasingly focused on critically synthesizing complex multi-criteria analysis, selectively working with an ever-growing toolkit to validate design proposals with computational tools.About the presenters:Matthew Gevers, Co-Urban Design Leader, Arup SydneyMatthew Gevers shares the Urban Design Leader role in Arup’s Sydney office. He recently transferred to Sydney and was Chief Urban Designer for Arup in Hong Kong where he combined his work at Arup with his role as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He has over 14 years’ experience in complex integrated planning and design projects. He has worked in multiple scales, from large scale strategic masterplans to streetscape enhancements. He has a particular interest in the combination between landscape and urban design. Matthew has led the strategic planning and design on high-profile public and private sector projects in Europe, Middle East and Asia, delivering the spatial planning for projects in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Macau, Taiwan and several locations in South East Asia. Projects range from economic masterplans and new town plans, to detailed urban design guidelines and precinct design. He has a long track record in leading masterplans for Development Banks in Asia Pacific, including projects for ADB and World Bank Group.Josh Young, Senior Urban Designer, Arup SydneyJosh is an Urban Designer with an interest in how computational design can enhance our understanding of cities and the way they evolve. He has experience developing urban analysis toolkits, planning frameworks and guidelines, precinct master planning, schematic design and feasibility testing. His experience spans across various sectors including public domain, infrastructure, education, commercial and health. The ‘Urban + Computation’ lecture series invites industry and academic experts from around the world to present their work and showcase the different methods they use to integrate advanced computation in the design of urban environments. The presentations explore the role of various computational methodologies on both the analytic and generative approaches to urban design. The lecture series is Organised by Dr. Mohammed Makki, part of his Design Studio in the Master of Architecture program in the School of Architecture at the University of Technology Sydney.
