Elementary students kick off school year in brand-new building [Video]

Claxton Elementary students started the school year off in a brand-new building in Guilford County.The new 91,000-square-foot facility supports innovative teaching and includes safety and technological upgrades. “It’s great to have everyone back together again,” said Claxton Elementary Principal Kevin Thoma. “We’ve been in two schools, separated the last two years but to bring everyone back together again is as great feeling.”The school year is off to a great start for students and teachers.”The day went as smooth as it could,” Thoma said. “Students and parents came in with excitement. Teachers were ready to welcome them to this new environment, and the smiles were huge.”Parents say the upgrades were needed.”I think the upgrades were necessary,” said parent Demetrick Johnson. “And it’s awesome for the kids. I went to elementary school, and it was nothing like this. It’s awesome for their futures.””We were able to walk into a brand new school, and it’s so nice,” added parent Nick Mardeusz. “We’re looking forward to it, too.”The school was rebuilt using nearly $2 billion in bond money approved by Guilford County voters.”It’s a great school,” said Johnson. “I had two kids in the old Claxton, and now they get to enjoy the new Claxton. It was a good first day.” The facility provides a great teaching and learning environment that the Claxton community is looking forward to utilizing this school year.”This new building gives us the opportunity to work together in groups and problem solve in flexible spaces,” Thoma said. “It opens up so much for our students, and we are able to tap into all their potential.”
